This past Sunday night/early Monday morning I finished watching BSG for the first time, almost two weeks after I began it! I am still filled with many thoughts and feels right now that I need to express. I'm glad I finished during a 3-day weekend so that I had time to finish watching and then have a day after to ~process~ it all, and explore fandom a bit...(all images from Tumblr):
So basically the letters "BSG" in the show's acronym might as well stand for "Baltar Six Gaius" as far as my primary emotional and intellectual interest in the show is concerned. Gaius remained my absolute favorite character, Gaius/Six my OTP of OTPs, and together they were my main impetus in watching the show--I feel a lot of my feelings about particular seasons and episodes have to do with what they were up to and whether they were present, and I did a fair bit of "Where is Gaius?!"-ing at various parts of the show. So much love...for all of his faults and terrible behavior at times he is IMO the best constructed character on the show with the best arc (minus a few missteps in season 4 which I will come to later). And Caprica's storyline and arc (aside from the Saul Story That I Try to Repress) was equally compelling...really all of the Sixes are great, it's amazing how Tricia Helfer is able to make them so distinct with the slightest changes in facial expression.

(I love that my OTP has such great official promo shots...<333)
I think seasons 1 and 2 remain my favorites, but seasons 3 and 4 had their moments as well:
Season 3
But to begin with, wow, the season 2 finale...my two favorite bbs in such opposition. O_o Much as I love Gaius I knew he'd be a disastuh as president so I kind of hoped Roslin would get away with the election fraud, but alas no...and then everything was TERRIBLE and "No...I wanted the opposite of this. ;_;" for a while, throughout the New Caprica arc (which was just SO bleak I found it hard to enjoy--and I found the arc often focused a lot of time on characters that I didn't care as much for and dragged a bit, so that I cannot say it's one of my fave storylines). There were a few really great scenes that I love to death though, like:
-When they first enter Colonial One and Caprica Six tells Gaius that she knows him very well (guh!)--the look of recognition in his eyes...
-Their scene when she discusses his downward spiral of self-loathing and he asks her to stay (I was a bit disappointed with their interactions when they were finally meeting again for the first time since the miniseries, but understandable given the circumstances)

-Gaius talking to Roslin in her cell about the horror of suicide bombings, imploring her to put a stop to them--such a FANTASTIC scene, especially the way it turns your preconceptions on their head--Gaius turns out to be holding the moral high ground, incredibly, and just gah, all of Gaius and Laura's scenes are wonderful. <3
-When they forced Gaius to sign the execution order at gunpoint (omg such an intense and heart-wrenching scene! ;_;), with Caprica dying trying to stop the others (aww)
-When Gaeta holds the gun to Gaius's head, and Gaius is like, KILL ME PLEASE, and then he lets him go...you know that the whole New Caprica situation messed with Gaius' head when he actually gave up his defining will to survive temporarily!

-When Gaius finds Hera as they look for D'Anna and holds her...so exciting (also Gaius + baby=adorable). And part of his role as Hera's guardian along with Caprica...
I think I enjoyed season 3 more once they were off New Caprica (maybe I just found it easier to watch), though I found it a bit hit and miss--I found myself mostly just interested in the scenes with Gaius on the basestar, especially once they explained projections and the whole question of his identity and the Final Five came up. (Also I loved "Battlestar Sonatica," lol, I kept wondering if that was "Moonlight Sonata" playing or not...so eerie and mysterious). All of those parts, and when he visited Galactica as a Cylon emissary and went to the Temple of the Five, were gripping and enjoyable to me, and same with his return to Galactica in captivity. (I had spent a lot of mental energy ever since the beginning of the NC arc trying to figure out how he could come back to the shipand be like they all were in middle school, even dreaming about it, lol--again, he was my main investment!) The scenes of him hanging himself and getting tortured were so haunting, though I liked how the storyline of Baltar revealing his complicity in the original Twelve Colonies attack piece by piece continued.
I loved his book (lol forever) and role as a social agitator, and the examination of the class situation in "Dirty Hands". I loved even more the new insights we got into his background in that episode--I never dreamed he came from such a humble background on another planet besides Caprica, and it made him even more sympathetic IMO (and heartbreaking, especially when the finale rolled around...;_;). I can just picture him as a boy growing up, feeling different and apart from everyone else because of his intellect, and dreaming of something more...and having issues with his family, as we see later. :/
There were a lot of boring, pointless filler episodes though (especially when Gaius wasn't even in an episode) and other blah stuff like the Dualla/Apollo/Starbuck/Anders love quadrangle which was so useless and annoying and made me really dislike/want to smack Apollo and Starbuck for a while. :/ I felt for Dualla especially--I wish she had gone with Billy, they were always so cute together, but oh well. In this vein the only parts of "Unfinished Business" that I liked were that the flashbacks showed that New Caprica was not all rainy bleak doom and gloom like we had seen thus far, and the Roslin/Adama flashbacks (♥) which came up so often later. /unpopular opinion (Though I also just hate watching boxing, so...). I mean really Starbuck, after all the trauma of Leobhan's mind games on New Caprica you're really hung up on romantic angst? O_o
Anyway, I did like the focus on Gaius in the final arc with his trial, though I also found it rather frustrating because of how BS the whole thing was--Roslin issued a BLANKET PARDON, that means EVERYONE, GAIUS INCLUDED! *rolleyes* I was rather annoyed at Roslin in this arc for being so hypocritical, and Gaeta went from a fave to on my shit list for a while with his perjury. >:( But thank god for Mark Sheppard (and his perpetual win--loved seeing him again in another great role--perfect lawyer for Baltar!), and then Apollo (who I liked more than ever in this arc, especially for his 100% trufax testimony at the end, PREACH). So glad Gaius got off, as he rightfully should have...and lol forever @ "Much as I hate to use a cat metaphor...I'm sure you'll land on your feet." Truer words were never spoken where Baltar is concerned, that cockroach survivalist. :p
Also Kara's exit in "Maelstrom" was really moving, especially with all the flashbacks with her mother than explain so much...the mandala thing was one of the more interesting story arcs aside from Baltar this season.
Season 4
I know it gets a lot of hate, but I did enjoy a lot of parts of season 4 (especially in the first half), appreciating that it was pretty fast-paced and mostly mytharc after all the boring fillers last season. I was okay with the identities of the Final Five and liked learning more about all that and the origins of the humanoid Cylons (because I was wondering how the centurions could have created them), with their memories of Earth. The exploration of the shared Opera House vision was cool (not knowing how lame it'd be in hindsight), especially when Roslin had Baltar come with her because she saw him in the vision (loved that connection with the Kobol vision!). Their scenes when Gaius is dying and she's patching him up, and then attempts to murder him after he finally confesses his crimes and guilt (which omg, finally! And ;_;)...so epic! And then her changing her mind and desperately trying to save him, after she spent all of last season going, "Sam Winchester Gaius Baltar must die!"...beautiful and perfect! I'm so glad they finally resolved their conflict enough to get on good terms again, more like partners of sorts, as they were in the very beginning and when she made him her VP.
Roslin/Baltar is the relationship on the show that captivates me the most after Gaius/Six, and not in a shippy or romantic way. I just find their evolving dynamic to be so fascinating, the way they become epic rivals, two sides of the same coin, the two presidents, both so full of a will to survive, moving towards each other a bit in terms of morality from their opposite poles, both becoming swept up by newfound religion and thinking themselves divine instruments, part of a higher plan, seemingly bound together by coincidence or destiny (with her happening to see him on the Riverwalk, going from running mates to rivals, and then the whole Opera House thing, etc)...their duality is fascinating to me. It's why I love this perfect promo pic, found in this wonderful s3 OST album cover--they have such great album and promotional art for this show, love all the symbolism...and it's fitting they put Roslin and Baltar together in a face-off given their opposition throughout that season:

(Also--my two favorites grouped together in one promo! :D)
The mutiny arc was also exciting and sad--I loved Roslin and Baltar joining forces (allies now! <33), talking about Gaeta and how they "both made mistakes in [their] presidential aide-de-camps" (parallels!), Roslin being an HBIC who refused to back down, and most of all Gaius's phone call to Gaeta and later his conversation at the table--"I know who you are." ;_;

I love this resolution to their relationship, how they come to understand one another and forgive each other in the end, after their differences and animosity--especially when in the beginning Gaeta admired Gaius so much and was always eager to help him out, it was adorable and sad in retrospect. Another complicated Gaius relationship on the show I love...(This gif set sums it up so well).
But there was also a lot about this season that I did NOT like at all. :/ I think overall aside from Daybreak and the mutiny arc 4.5 was a mess. I especially hated how Gaius and Caprica Six were used, the way they just DROPPED their relationship for no apparent reason after they were finally reunited on the same ship and out of prison (like really now, after all they've been through, neither would bother to seek the other out and talk to him/her?! *rolleyes*). I also disliked how the head visions too all but disappeared (I especially missed the chance to see a little more Head!Gauis with Caprica). The Caprica/Saul storyline was the most random, stupid, horrible and pointless thing ever, and I'm trying to repress that from my memory. D: They could have done better with Gaius as well. I liked some of the cult stuff (it was very funny at first, and ironic), but some of it was just...didn't work for me. I'd say it was the low point in his storyline, and that there was a lot of wasted potential for his character and Caprica's. *sigh*
Two other disappointing things, on perhaps a more superficial level: the loss of the characteristic opener ("The Cylons were created by man....") and the loss of Gaius' lovely mane of hair. Whose idea was it to cut it?! :( It always looked so good long (and symbolically set him apart from the rest on Galactica in their shirt military haircuts), and then they killed it. :( In some ways I even preferred the Jesus look because he still had the long hair.
BUT THE FINALE--THE FINALE MADE UP FOR A LOT OF THINGS.
Daybreak Pt.1-3
THE FLASHBACKS OMG. GAIUS AND HIS DAD AND HOW CAPRICA SIX FINALLY WON OVER HIS HEART AND GOT HIM TO GIVE HER ACCESS TO THE DEFENSE SYSTEM ("THE THINGS MEN DO FOR LOVE"--AND HER HAPPY, WONDERING SMILE AT HIS USE OF THAT WORDS, DARING TO HOPE)...JUST SEEING MORE OF THEIR ORIGIN STORY, ESPECIALLY THE WAY THE LAST SCENE WAS INTERCUT INTO THE LAST TEN MINUTES, KILLED ME. Also Roslin's tragedy with her family, my poor HBIC. ;_;
Aside from the flashbacks though, I was not so fond of "Daybreak Part 1"--I even kind of put off watching the last two episodes because I was so set up for disappointment, worried things just would not turn out as I hoped. :/ I even began to think Gaius just wouldn't go on the mission which would have rendered his whole Hera storyline pointless.
BUT THEN THE LAST TWO EPISODES! I think the payoff for the Opera House vision was a little weak, but still great, seeing Gauis holding Hera and wandering around the ship with Caprica Six, intercut with the Opera House vision...
And the scene right before when Caprica Six tells Gaius she's proud of him and they kiss and then see their head!versions together and realize they both see them--perfect, I think I might have actually started clapping my hands in my squee! <333 ABOUT DAMN TIME GUYS. I do wish they had discussed that more, however, because I've been wanting to hear that conversation all along...*sigh* I still don't entirely understand why Gaius had the ability to project as a Cylon did--was it all Head!Six using her ~angelic powers~ to put the full scale projections into his mind? :s. I'm also still mad that the writers dropped them for so long, but I'm glad they at least picked them up again in time for the end.
Poor Boomer, her story was perhaps the most tragic of all. ;_; I loved seeing her projections with Tyrol and her final speech about choices. (Tyrol also got a pretty rough deal, didn't he?). The Starbuck thing was kind of weird and maybe a cop-out, but I'm strangely okay with it--I mean given there's this deity on the show, this higher power, who has been orquestrating things all along, I can buy that in giving herself over to her destiny she was able to come back to complete her mission and then find peace. (And maybe I also just didn't find it so strange a concept after practically the same thing happened on ATS with Cordelia, lol). It's a lovely scene, and it's nice that she she was finally at peace, after saying goodbye to the Admiral ("nothing but the rain" daww) and Lee. The scene where she made the final jump using her beautiful music was also incredible and exhilarating--I'm glad they did finally find the real Earth, just as Galactica was wearing down. I never shipped Lee/Kara much so on that count I was not too torn up on that count, though I did feel bad for Lee--especially when his father had also abandoned him...for reasons. :s
The final scene with Roslin and Adama broke my heart, I legit teared up when he put his wedding ring on her finger after she died, with their beautiful musical theme playing...and talking about their cabin. :( Though as much as I liked his devotion to her, I don't quite understand why he wanted to live the rest of his life alone away from his son. There are a few things that don't quite add up in the finale, especially the idea that everyone (with as fractious a population as they had on that fleet) just agreed to give up all their technology, etc. But I can mostly overlook those plot holes and love the finale because:
GAIUS/CAPRICA SIX OMGGG AT LAAAAST! ♥ \o/ It almost makes up for the BS throughout season 4, that final scene between them, the "You know, I know about farming"...brb sobbing forever--his faaaace! ;_;

I thought it was a perfect ending for him and Caprica Six, a fitting conclusion to his near flawless character arc. I love how he ends up going back to the roots he tried to escape so long (even though um, IDK how much he'd know about growing things from being on a dairy farm), and that they get to BE together, after everything they've been through--the one other person they had fallen in love with, against all odds. It's not a purely happy ending for them, since Gaius has to do the work he never wanted (farming is hard work, especially with no technology!), and they both have to remember their guilt about Caprica, but still...they end up walking into the sunset together! This is not a common occurrence with my ships, lol, d00med!shipper that I am...;) I hope they manage to have a good life together and maybe even have those kids Caprica Six has wanted for so long (actually fulfilling the promise of the first Opera House vision literally)!

TL;DR: I was so thrilled with the satisfying conclusion to my primary emotional investment in the series that I couldn't help but feel happy after the finale, for all the other issues. :p
The *very* ending though...yeah, I was not sure what to think about that. O_o At least the Head!Gaius/Six looked BAMF walking down the street together, and I took satisfaction in the fact that James Callis and Tricia Helfer were the last people we saw on the show...;)
Also anyone know of some good Gaius/Six vids? I have been having trouble finding decent ones, this is the best I've found so far:
I need more quality Gaius/Six vids in my life.
Anyway, so while it wasn't perfect I still love this show overall and think it's one of the best I've ever seen, if not the best. ♥ NGL I want to watch it all over again already, and have begun the miniseries.I had already rewatched a number of Gaius and Six scenes, particularly pertaining to Hera, before I finished the end of s4. I wish I could show it to a new viewer...I also am going to at least give Caprica a chance, even though I hear it's not great.
+In other TV news, I seem to be unable to get out of "marathoning" mode so I've begun watching Revenge--which is also really good and addictive and tragic, though in a somewhat different way...

+In other TV news, I seem to be unable to get out of "marathoning" mode so I've begun watching Revenge--which is also really good and addictive and tragic, though in a somewhat different way...
