Coming in just under the deadline wire, here is my [ profile] holidayanimorph exchange gift for [ profile] skirtsandtea--sorry this took me so long! I hope you like it.

And with this, I'm now 3/3 in my holiday exchanges, at last!

Title: What Are Best Friends For?
Fandom: Animorphs
Pairing/Characters: Marco/Jake (friendship), Marco, Jake
Rating: G
Warnings: Spoilers through the end of the series
Word Count: 617
Prompt: "Marco and Jake friendship, about how well Marco knows Jake and how they support one another throughout the war, how their relationship changes but still has these roots that never change"
Summary: Marco reflects on his friendship with Jake at different points in time, from the beginning to the end...

I can still remember the moment we became friends. We were in Kindergarten, and I saw you had a Batman lunch box--alerting me to the fact that you were cool, even if maybe a little misguided in your choice of favorite superhero. I sat down next to you and showed you my Spiderman lunch box, and the next thing I knew we were chatting like we'd known each other our whole lives. At one point we began debating whether Batman could beat Spiderman…something we've been discussing ever since.

When my mom died, you were my rock. Not that I would ever tell you that. But seriously, I don’t know what I would have done without you. My dad was such a mess, I couldn’t really turn to him. You were always there for me, though, ready to talk if I needed it, or not. Sometimes you can be a pain with your whole “strong, serious type” personality, but it was just what I needed then, at the beginning; someone who could just sit with me and keep me company, and listen, who didn’t feel the need to fill the silence. When I needed a distraction, you always knew the right video game to play with me, or the right debate topic to bring up. You got me through the worst of it.

This is insane! Morphing into animals and fighting a secret alien invasion? If it were anyone else involved, I would have said, “No way, José,” and turned my back on the whole crazy idea. But you want to fight them, to save Tom. So I guess I’ll fight with you—someone has to have your back. And after all, what are best friends for?

You're changing, Jake. I mean, we’re all changing in our own ways, fighting a guerilla war is obviously going to do that to you. Rachel especially seems more unhinged than ever these days. But you’re the one who’s scaring me most of all. There’s a hard edge to you that I don’t remember seeing before, and that I don’t like one bit. The other day you sent me out on a mission that nearly got me killed, and you didn’t even seem that shaken up about it. Winning this war seems to be all that matters to you, now. Even if we do win, I’m afraid I’m going to lose you.

It's all over at last. It still seems surreal, no longer fighting for my life every day, and living the life of a rich celebrity. So much of my life these days seems like a dream come true.

But in all of my dreams about the war ending, I always imagined us enjoying victory together. I'd thought we could hang out the way we used to, act like the teenagers we were supposed to be, without the weight of the world on our shoulders. But you weren't able to let that weight go. You feel distant, shutting me out. I barely even see you, except when I spy on you in morph.

I'm a multimillionaire with two homes, seven cars, hired help, a model for a girlfriend, and a TV show. But I'm missing my best friend. Victory doesn't really feel complete without you, man.

Unbelievable. After so many close calls over the years, and after the whole damn war had actually ended, we are still going to die fighting? Talk about irony. I knew I shouldn't have let you drag me into this!

But I couldn't refuse you, couldn't let you down, and you knew it. And honestly, as cheesy as this sounds…if I'm going to die, I'd rather it happen with my best friend at my side.
