sherrilina: (Arya Stark (Game of Thrones))

Ugh once again I find myself angry and disappointed by the Emmy nominations, I don't know why I even bother to expect anything different...*sigh*

My main beef is the way The Borgias once again got snubbed in all of the major categories, especially acting when such average performances as Mr. Bates, Anna, and the Earl of Grantham got recognized, what the hell?! I mean I love me some Downton Abbey, even enjoyed season 2 unlike most of fandom, but it certainly did not deserve to get SO many awards, especially at the expense of better shows that were ignored. (And if they wanted to insist on giving it that many acting ones, they couldn't have given nods to the more talented cast members like Laura Carmichael?) Michelle Dockery can get it though, hope she wins. And I hope The Borgias at least win in some of the technical categories it was nominated in, like music (the music in the finale was stunning) and costumes...should have been nominated for art direction too (one of the most beautiful shows I've ever seen), but oh well. It irritates me though when I see people complaining that Game of Thrones got screwed over or "hosed" because hello, YOU GOT BEST DRAMA AND BEST ACTOR THAT IS PRETTY MAJOR FOR A GENRE SHOW! /rant

Also rooting for Community to win for "Remedial Chaos Theory" (glad it got that at least, ugh) and for Veep (which was very funny and deserved recognition, though I feel it had a big advantage being on HBO, which seems to be where the nominators look first regardless of quality). And I was delighted to see Portlandia nominated for "One Episode More" (the BSG epp, and the only one I've seen actually, lol), because it is so accurate and clever! ;) But yeah, I don't think I will be watching, as usual. It's funny, I watch so much TV these days, and yet the Oscars are still a much bigger deal for me.

+ After 2.5 months of working on it, I finally finished reading Game of Thrones! Unfortunately too late to read the copy of ACOK I borrowed from my GG-and-GoT-loving classmate, since there's only 2 weeks (!!) left in the program and she moves away right after...but I'll find it somewhere else. I'm just happy to be finally done, each of these are so damn long it feels like a real accomplishment, lol.

I was impressed by how well they condensed this monster into the TV show and keep it mostly faithful. I wonder though, will we ever learn more about certain things like Rhaegar and Lyanna (what did she want Ned to promise her?), etc? Because that was a bit of intriguing backstory for me that was mostly cut from the show and which I wanted to know about...and then Ned died before dreaming more about it. :/ But looking back, I do think that aside from Roz and the sexposition scenes a lot of the things HBO added improved on the book, like showing Renly and Loras (explaining why he decided to contest for the crown and showing their relationship) and giving us more insights into Cersei, like that scene with Robert...

And of course Dany/Drogo was waaaay more shippable in the show, IMO, aside from the first scene. I found in interesting the way HBO changed that one scene where she tries to convince her husband to try to take the Iron Throne for her, making it into that intimate scene of her doing his hair when in the book they've just finished sex--amazed that HBO didn't take advantage of that for their usual female nudity quota! Also just the acting, the pain and panic in his voice when he almost lost her, which doesn't translate as well in the books...

One thing I found just as shippable though (if unrequited) was Dany/Ser Jorah...loved how desperate he was in the end when he thought she was going to kill herself! Honestly I don't find much that's shippable in this book so I have to go with what I can. Likewise Jon Snow was JUST as annoying and emo and useless in the book as on the show, contrary to what I had heard. The only way the books are better is that on the show he looks like he's in his mid-20s while he's acting 15, which makes it all so much worse.

Oh and it was nice to have everyone's names spelled out this time, made it easier to follow than it is on the show...for example I totally did not catch that the guy who torments Jon Snow on the wall, Yoren, was the same guy who helped Arya escape from King's Landing. And getting Sansa's inner voice was very interesting, you can better see how her whole worldview changes...

From a cursory flip-through ACOK though, did they move all the Jaimie and Brienne stuff from SoS into season 2 then? :s Since I notice they didn't have POV chapters in book 2...

+ I also finally finished watching Arrested Development for the first time, after starting it on Netflix about a year ago, lol. I hadn't known s3 wasn't a full season so the end took me by surprise....not sure how I feel about some of the twists, but it made for a good finale. I kind of worry about how the "new" season will be, thought it's neat they are actually bringing it back!

+ And finally I snagged this "Guess the Ship" meme from [ profile] rosaxx50 (I meant to do this when it emerged like a year ago, but um better late than never):

(1) Think of 15 ships you support.
(2) List them using descriptions of the characters involved rather than their names.
(3) Have your f-list guess as many of the ships as they can.

1) London teen helps war survivor heal from trauma as they hold hands through time and space. (Doctor/Rose guessed by [ profile] sunnytyler001)

2) Brother and sister are each other's romantic ideals and the only other ones who understand each other's literary references. (Cesare/Lucrezia guessed by [ profile] sunnytyler001)

3) Co-dependent king and ward are miserable without each other's love despite their ever greater clashes of wills. (Uther/Morgana guessed by [ profile] sunnytyler001)

4) He continues to see and interact with his non-human girlfriend after her death, sometimes holding hands with thin air in public. (Jeremy/Anna guessed by [ profile] rosaxx50)

5) A pair of young people from very different parts of the city find companionship and love through mutual intellectual interests. (Dan/Blair guessed by [ profile] rosaxx50)

6) Two curly-haired dead flatmates feel alive when they're together. (Mitchell/Annie guessed by [ profile] sunnytyler001)

7) A couple of pirates with intense chemistry are more alike than either is willing to admit. (Jack/Elizabeth guessed by [ profile] rosaxx50)

8) An egoist unexpectedly falls in love with someone besides himself; she falls for him too despite her mission and beliefs. (Gaius/Six guessed by [ profile] blasterboy606)

9) He makes her feel warm and whole and helps her cope with a devastating loss; she breaks his heart. (Jacob/Bella guessed by [ profile] rosaxx50)

) He's rebelling against Heaven, she seeks power through the Church; when they're not trying to kill each other, they make out. (Marisa/Asriel guessed by [ profile] rosaxx50)

11) Two nerds can relate to each other's pasts of unleashing apocalypses through hubris and alliances with demons. (*~SASSY~* guessed by [ profile] probing_grays)

12) Two best friends often know what the other is thinking without speaking a word and are fiercely loyal to one another. (Harry/Hermione guessed by [ profile] rosaxx50)

13) A criminal mastermind and a female police agent gradually develop friendship and romantic feelings despite being different species from different worlds. (Artemis/Holly guessed by [ profile] hmsharmony)

14) Two kids grow closer while fighting in a war together, but are still too shy and awkward to ask each other to the school dance. (Jake/Cassie guessed by [ profile] probing_grays)

15) A warrior and a seer become best friends and then something more, though outside forces prevent them from ever being together. (Cordy/Angel guessed by [ profile] rosaxx50)

Also someone please rescue me from Tumblr.

Ugh, yes, Emmy nominations. There's not much you can do about them, although their WAS some good this year! C'mon, Game of Thrones getting repeat nominations (and BIG ones, like you said) is really awesome. HBO trumps their hate of genre shows, which makes me so happy, lol! I've never seen Downtown Abbey because I'm not really into those kind of shows, so I don't know if they deserved all those awards but WOW they got a lot of them.

I think I'm rooting for 30 Rock (because it was hilarious again this season!), Alec Baldwin (although I wouldn't mind Louis C.K. winning), Amy Poehler, Max Greenfield, Merritt Wever, Breaking Bad, Claire Danes, Bryan Cranston, and Anna Gunn for all the major categories. Also: COMMUNITY!!! But it's the Emmys...not much we can do about their stupidity haha

As for the meme, I was stumped on just about all of them. Is #8 Baltar/Six?

Downton Abbey is really good (you should check it out!), and addicting, but not THAT good (or those actors nominated aside from Michelle Dockery are not very impressive in their performances), and season 2 had a lot of flaws so nominating it for writing...O_o

And yep correct, it is Gaius/Six! ;) And lol, well there's at least one other one here you should be familiar with, in terms of shows we both have watched in the past...:p

1. Nine/Rose
2. Cesare/Lucretia
3. Uther/Morgana???
6. Annie/Mitchell
8. Jaime/Brienne

From: [identity profile]
Yes on all of them but the last one! :D (Well #1 is "Doctor/Rose" but yeah close enough! ;)) Congrats! Though lol, now that you mention it #8 does sound like Jaimie/Brienne, although I guess he already loved his sister too?

(Yes, I do ship Uther/Morgana, I choose to ignore the extremely obvious and clumsy Ret-Con in season 3...:p It clearly was never the writers' original intent for Uther and Morgana to be related, and it seems like something they came up with VERY late in the game, like late s2 at the earliest--since Morgause' backstory cited in the one epp makes no sense if Morgana is not Gorlois' child...and frankly IMO they still wrote them with a lot of romantic-like tension in s3 even after they'd decided they were father/daughter! ;)).

From a cursory flip-through ACOK though, did they move all the Jaimie and Brienne stuff from SoS into season 2 then? :s Since I notice they didn't have POV chapters in book 2...

Yeah, they moved the Jaime/Brienne stuff from ASOS up on the show. But there's still more for them to do! It wasn't all moved up. Just some of it.

Date: 2012-07-19 10:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Okay thanks! I can see why they would want to move that around to give the actor more to do in season 2 and allow more space in season 3. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

Did you watch 'Running Wild'? It was from the same people who made 'Arrested Development'.

Oh my 15 ships? How would I come up with that? *scratches head*

Date: 2012-07-19 10:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
No, I have not! What is it about?

And lol, do you not have even 15 ships, or would it be just too hard to only pick that may? :p What can I say, I'm a hopeless shipper...though some were hard to come up with descriptions for so that was a factor in my selection.

It's about this crazy billionaire who has a daughter with a tree hugger/environmentalist girlfriend and then there are some crazy neighbours. The daughter is a bit like Maeby.

And no, I don't think I could come up with 15 ships. Ten perhaps if I really really try.

4 reminds me of Gaius/Six, but it doesn't seem to be right. Anna/Jeremy?
5) Blair/Dan?
7) Elizabeth/Jack
9) Jacob/Bella
12) Harry/Hermione
15) Angel/Cordelia?

Date: 2012-07-20 01:01 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Yay, all correct, well done! :D (I'm especially happy someone got the Jack/Elizabeth one!) And haha yes I deliberately tried to make it sound like Gaius/Six as a fake-out, and to highlight the parallels between them...;) I guess it works better if the G/6 one hasn't already been guessed though!

So you have seen ATS then, yes?

Date: 2012-07-20 01:52 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
I haven't actually seen any AtS, but I run across spoilers online all the time, because they're included in discussions about fandom/tv in general.

HOW DID I MISS ARTEMIS/HOLLY? I was just listening to someone talk (unspoilery) about the last book!

Date: 2012-07-20 02:05 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Oh man well as I'm sure I've told you before, you MUST watch ATS, because it is the best!!! (My favorite show for a while, I love it more than BTVS...which I assume you have seen?). Though lol I was very spoiled about it from being in BTVS fandom first and I still loved it, so...:)

Lol, yep that was one of them! ;) Haven't you not read that far though, as I recall from an earlier conversation? :s And yeah, I need to read this book soon, clearly! In the past I would have snapped that puppy up the day it came out...*sigh*

Wow, really?! Lol girl, I guess you need to get on watching the rest of that too...:p How did that happen? I admit I first began watching when season 7 was airing so that is the first BTVS I was exposed's funny the assumptions I made and thoughts I had at the time, before I watched the rest and knew what was what.

And oh yeah that's right! You've done better than me in some ways since I only read about 50% of TAC (i.e. the Artemis parts).

But like, is it a decent book? Can you hint if the writing is as bad as the last two (barring A/H in TTP)? Last book I literally skipped all the non-A/H parts and hence read only about 50% of the book, lol...can you tell me that much?

Date: 2012-07-20 01:53 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
I actually really enjoyed it, a lot more than AC (I was so focused on A/H in TTP that I didn't even notice the writing then). There was a fair bit that made me angry and roll my eyes, but I would read it again.

Is 14 from Animorphs? Uh. Cassie/Jake? Rachel/Tobias? I WILL NAME ALL PERMUTATIONS IF NEED BE

OMG YESSS YES IT IS YOU GOT IT RIGHT ON YOUR FIRST TRY! :DDD So glad somebody got that one after all, I was like, "Where are the Animorphs stans on my flist?" Four for you! (I forgot you had read them too).

Jake/Cassie were my first ever OTP, beginning my attraction for d00med ships, lol. I liked Rachel/Tobias okay too, but I was never as invested in that ship...probably because Jake and Cassie were also my favorite characters. I actually made a fanmix for J/C once (my first one ( need to get around to re-uploading it to a site like mediafire or something), and at one point in college I began a project of going through the e-books and recording all the J/C quotes for each book...

woooooo! Well, I guessed that ship first because Tobias is a hawk and probably won't go to many dances ;)

hahaha, here is something else we disagree on! I always liked Rachel/Tobias more, but that was because Tobias was my faaaaav. And Rachel was my second fav.

Date: 2012-07-20 04:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Yep, your reasoning is good, although I think he did go to this dance in his human form? :s This was the awesome Cassie book where there's that Andalite virus that infects Ax and then everyone else and eventually Cassie has to save the day by herself with the help of her Yeerk "friend" you remember it? It was one of my favorites! (They really should have utilized the Yeerk morph more later, IMO).

Haha what else is new? :p Yeah Jake was my ~first literary crush~ and the one I loved most and may or may not have planned to name a son after if I had one, and I loved him even more for the way his arc went in the end, the effect the war had on him--he is such a tragic hero! (Also I feel like he had a lot in common with Future!Dean in "The End"). Cassie is the one I identified with most (especially in terms of wearing unfashionable clothes and not being super into shopping and appearances and such). And just, THEY WERE BOTH ALIVE so I was heartbroken and confused why they couldn't be together when I first read it! ;_; I was sad to see there are many Cassie haters in fandom...:/

Tobias...I did really love his one book where he learned the truth about his father. He did have an interesting perspective.

Date: 2012-07-20 03:22 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Haha I was hoping you would show up to guess that one! :D It is SASSSSSYYYYY indeed, ofc...

And lol I take it then that it is explained more later in the series then? ;) I keep seeing people shipping them so I kind of hoped there would be more behind it than just the little that's in book 1. And so with Jaimie is him being released also not until SoS, or does ACOK like end with his release?

Date: 2012-07-20 04:04 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Haha, I was afraid there would be none left for me! Then I saw it and was super excited :DDDDD

The best Rhaegar/Lyanna stuff is in aCoK, so you're almost there! And yeah, aSoS opens with Jaime's POV (or at least, if it's not the first chapter, it's pretty damn close to the front)

Ooh good, glad to hear it, something to look forward to! Because tbh, while I know that there will be a lot that's different because of changes and such, I am kind of eager to get to a book where I *don't* already know the basic plot....

The House of the Undying is about 50 bajillion times better in the books than in the TV shows. I think it should be worth it for that alone.

Intriguing! Does it involve revelations instead of just rehashing what we know already? I did like what they did in one sense though, the symbolism of her being tempted by the two things she wanted most--her son/husband (human family) and the Iron Throne, but that she rejects them and keeps looking for her dragon "children."

my only part to pick with the GoT nominations is that I don't see why Peter is nominated again when his performance was not as strong as some of the others.

Yeah, IA, aside from the Blackwater speech I don't recall him being really outstanding...I feel though like in some ways he stands out just because he is a "dwarf" who can actually act really well? I think I've heard that the whole show only got the green-light to happen once they had confirmed he was on board...

And so true...I mean I mostly try to ignore the Emmys at least, but it's hard sometimes...

Fuck the Emmy's lol. Annoyed that they keep on ignoring Simon Baker just because The Mentalist is procedural.

From: [identity profile]
Lol, tbh I think it's more likely they keep on ignoring Simon Baker because he's on a drama that is NOT on cable TV! ;) Generally the drama category is fully taken up by cable shows, like they don't even look on network TV unless as a last resort, especially in recent years. And I do remember the woman in "The Good Wife" getting a nod a few years back, and that's a proceduralish thing too. It's stupid.

About time Jaimie was a POV character, Cersei as well...I kept flipping through looking for new people with book 2, and was disappointed to see only Theon and Davos added.

Yes, I hear her storyline gets boring, but at this point I like her. The one I wouldn't mind seeing offed is Jon Snow because GOD is he so whiny and irritating and useless...and for a storyline with Wildlings the Wall has the capacity to be SO boring most of the time...:s

The main thing I'm excited about is that Sherlock got 13 nominations. It so deserves it too. Luther is also up for some (in most cases against Sherlock) and the category I'm most conflicted about is Best Lead Actor because Idris Elba is as amazing as Benedict. I'm not sure who should win.
